If you think about it, the scene in Rahab’s house of, uh, ill repute is comical. Why Joshua’s spies went there first thing, I don’t know for sure, but I have my suspicions. Anyway, somebody rats on ‘em and now they’re in way over their heads. The cops come beating on the door. Rahab gives them a smile and a wink and sweetly puts them on the wrong trail.

Why? Because she liked these guys? Felt sorry for them? No! They were her ticket to survival! Her family’s too. The city gate is shut. The cops are watching. She’s got these two guys over a barrel and she knows it! “Swear to me you’ll spare me and my family!” Can you say “no-brainer”? They’re as dependent on her as she is on them.

But here’s the really interesting thing. Whatever these men were doing in her place to start with, they hadn’t come to make an evangelistic call. They hadn’t come to preach. And, suddenly, from the mouth of this foreign hooker comes a sermon: “Yahweh has given you this land. Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea. Yahweh is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”

Do we know who God is? Wouldn’t it be something, beloved, if the whores and the thieves beat us to the answer? The teacher asks, “Who is God?” Up goes a hand. “You–the lady with the long, painted nails and the gaudy bracelet!”

“He’s no one to be trifled with.”

Amen. Go to the head of the class, Rahab.
